Celebrated Venda artist, Noria Mabasa, exhibits new works in clay and wood at Bell-Roberts Gallery. The themes of these works are conceptually rooted in Venda mythology and clay works combine female forms and faces with traditional pot forms. Mabasa runs an art school in Venda from where she instructs her students in the dying art of clay-pot and sculpture making. She started working in clay in 1974 and, motivated by a dream, two years later became the first Venda woman to work in wood. She has exhibited both locally and abroad.

In 2003, Mabasa was awarded the prestigious national award of “Silver Level of the Order of the Baobab” for her “exceptional achievements in unique forms of fine arts under trying circumstances”.
Noria has also participated in various exhibitions locally and internationally since 1985 and her work is represented in major corporate and private collections worldwide.
The exhibition runs from 28 January until 21 February 2009.

Pigment on Paper, showing at the new UCA Gallery in Observatory from 28 January – 28 February, presents work by five local artists, the commonality being the paper on which the images appear.

To start at the conceptual beginning: think sketchbook, pencil, charcoal, ink. The work on paper is, perhaps, the foundation of the artwork; the line drawn on the page as a means of artistic exploration, which may (or may not) lead to other media. Pushing the idea further, one finds printmaking, watercolour painting, photography. Possibly the most recent development in this conceptual constellation of works on paper is a relationship to graphic design and illustration, with which the traditional perception of “fine art” is becoming increasingly comfortable. What results is an inclusive creative display, beginning and ending with pigment on paper.
Pigment on Paper will open on Wednesday, 28 January at 6pm and closes on Saturday 28 February.
